Making a Difference
To support her, we introduced Lily to Zainab, one of our Outcome Champion Care Workers. Zainab is warm, supportive, and outgoing – someone who could offer encouragement without pressure.
In March 2024, Zainab mentioned the local coffee mornings at Kenton Library. Lily was interested but unsure at first. With Zainab by her side, she gave it a go – and really enjoyed it. They chatted with others about hobbies, holidays, and day-to-day life.
“She had such a lovely time,” Zainab shared. “She told me she’d love to come again if more events like this happened.”
What started as a one-off visit quickly became a routine Lily looked forward to.
Confidence Growing Week by Week
Over the following six weeks, Lily continued attending the library coffee mornings alongside Zainab. The familiar environment and consistent support gave her confidence. Then, in April, Lily did something new, she came to our Coffee and Cake event on her own.
Normally, Lily prefers going out with a Care Worker she knows well. But this time, she felt ready to step out solo, joining other clients, Care Workers, and office staff for bingo, conversation, and cake.
“The cakes and scones were lovely,” she said. “If you did this again, I’d love to attend.”
After noticing that Lily found it difficult to play bingo due to her sight, her care team arranged for her Care Worker Natasha to accompany her on bingo days, so she could take part fully, with someone there to mark off her numbers.
Lily’s journey is a reminder that support isn’t just about daily tasks, it’s about listening, responding, and helping people stay connected to the things that bring them joy. What made the biggest difference was having a regular carer she trusted, someone who took the time to get to know her.
Now, Lily attends events on her own, something she hadn’t done for a long time. It’s brought a renewed sense of purpose and a real lift to her well-being.
