I first came into care following the passing of my dad. Before this I had worked in the finance sector for fifteen years and was ready for a change of career, but unsure of what to do and when to make the break from my current job.
My dad and I were involved in a car accident. My dad sustained injuries which, unfortunately , were serious and meant he wouldn’t survive past twelve months. During the time he spent in the hospital he had the best care possible from some amazing individuals. Very quickly we realised that the Doctor looking after dad, was and still is our ‘ANGEL ON EARTH’. Ben went the extra mile, above and beyond, for my dad in his care with empathy and compassion and he was my inspiration. The change in my dad when Ben and a couple of the other staff were around was so nice to see.
I cared for my dad during his last days, though a devastating time, it was a privilege to give him the dignity he deserved. I knew then that I wanted to ‘make a difference’ to somebody’s day.
I don’t think of it as work. Yes it is a job, but it’s more than that. Knowing I have made a difference to somebody’s day is so rewarding. I listen to what the service users are saying and give them time to converse- to let me know how they are feeling and what I can do to help. I enjoy a good natter and laugh with each person I visit and care for. Having good interactions and seeing a smile on their face is a pleasure. One of the ladies I care for is non verbal – I natter to her all throughout the time I am there (sometimes to the annoyance of my colleagues because I never shut up!) and she will smile, nod and laugh.
However over the course of the last few months she has started to say the occasionally word. I cannot express just how proud I am of her and myself I am. The first time she spoke I admit was very emotional. It’s so nice to hear ‘I’m glad it’s you Annette’ because this makes me feel I have made a difference and have a positive impact on their day.
I enjoy working with Be Caring and from the first contact with the team I have felt valued. People are approachable will help when they can. I have been supported throughout my time here and in recent months been given the opportunity of being Medication Champion – challenging at times and stressful but for the most part rewarding.
I thoroughly enjoy this role – MAR chart auditing, checking and updating medications on PASS, follow ups with GP’s and Pharmacies and interactions with care staff regarding service users medications. Working together to ensure the best care for each person and to give full support to every member of care staff to ensure the safe use of medications.
